The United State Justice Department has recently caught two Chinese individuals that have been suspected of helping North Korean hackers between Dec 2017 and April 2019. Reportedly, the defendants allegedly laundered over a hundred million dollars’ worth of stolen cryptocurrency to obscure transactions for the benefit of actors based in North Korea.
Various methods to complicate the trail of the stolen crypto from the police were used by the hackers. The funds were then cleverly laundered using dusting techniques that sent hundreds of automated transactions designed to obfuscate the source of the funds.
Additionally, some of the funds obtained were, according to the value of crypto, proven to be from the Japanese exchange cyber-attack, Coincheck. Notably, South Korea is known to be under international sanctions and is trying to get funding for its Pyongyang’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs.
At the time, North Korea denied all the allegations, calling them a fabrication aimed at tarnishing the country’s image.
